Correction to the previous: Gelshield 200 by International not Hempel

I recently bought a used x-99 (former Tupak) and I wonder if anybody knows what paint is used on the bottom. I think it´s the same as on the bottom of Xpense and many other 99:s (same colour at least). I am sure that it is not an antifouling, but can it be hempels epoxisealer (Gelshield 200)? I would appreciate help, since the bottom needs some fixing and I don´t want to destroy the beautiful finish! Other tips on making the boat fast are also welcome!

Hello.
We are experiencing some problems with the attachment of the kicking strap to the boom. The retaining pin of the car that slides on the rail on the boom has already broken three times, although we take great care not to overtighten the kicking strap. Have other boats experienced the same phenomenon and is there any solution ?
Thanks and regards.

Propeller.

About Cowes Week 2004, there will be at leat one more X-99 than there was last year, as I am planning to do it.(There was only one X-99 this year)
They will normally want at least 5 entries to run a one design class, however I was planning to race under IRC anyway. Hope to see you there !!

Does anyone have a solution for improved sheaves with roller bearings for the main and genua halyards?

Hi,
Who has experience with little cracks in mast? It is a mast from 1996 and has this nice little hole at the hight of the through hull. It was adived to strengthen this part of the mast when little cracks occur. Has anyone experience in this procedure? Does the strengthening hold, or will the mast break anyway?

Hi, just bought an X-99. The class seems to have died over here so maybe you can help. I understand that the new boats have twin backstays, I assume that it is a single backstay that is split at the bottom - what is the advantage? I have bought a boat with no rig and want to upgrade to the latest spec.

Thanks to all that replied regarding my previous question. I would like to request for assistance again with 2 major aspects as we are trying to prepare our boat for the coming sailing season here starting Last Sept.
1. Engine:
I have a bukh engine, but unfortunately the original manual got wet and now unsusable, can anyone please let me know how I can get replacement owner's manual for Bukh engine? Or can someone scan and send me a copy of the manual? Also how do I know what Bukh engine model does my X99 have? My engine seem underpowered, last time the wind was blowing storng, I couldn't even motor out of the marina! Does anyone have this problem too?
2. Keel Fairing
Has anyone faired their X99's keel? If you have faired your X99 before, can you please share information on how you did it? Did you use NACA profiles? What profiles? Any special techniques and tools?
Looking forward to your reply!
Best regards!

I am hoping that some the more experienced X99 skippers and owners can help me. After inspecting our new boat, we found that she only has 1 set of jib halyards and one set of spin halyards, as well as a single luff attachement on the forestay. We are hoping to add a double luff attachement on her to be able to do jib peels as well as add more halyards to be able to do a peel for headsail or spinnaker. Any information on how best to do this would be appreciated. Please give info on what brand, model, etc. of equipment did you use.

Does anyone have a good idea what the best mainsheet block system set-up can be? E.g. I have a triple block at the boom but having the line so close together creates friction. This makes it time- and effort-consuming when rounding (up as well as down). 3 seperate blocks sitting apart should be better. Any ideas?

Martin Bonnen <mbo@x99.dk>
www.x99.dk, Copenhagen Denmark - Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at 09:29:40 (MET DST)
Rule 17.2 states that carbon fibre is prohibited anywhere on the boat.
The intention with this rule is to keep the running cost of the boat as low as possible prohibiting the use of expensive exotic materials.
Since 1986 a product like carbon has become a commodity. As an example the Harken Carbo blocks (I don’t know for sure if they include carbon fibers) has become cheaper than the Harken Black Magic Air Blocks and the Frederiksen racing and orbit blocks.
It would benefit the class if we could be flexible on this point.

Dear X-99ers,
The Danish and North European Championship has been arranged as an intensive two day competition. Entry and registration is open until 9 o’clock on the first day of racing.
Consequently the normal check on crew and equipment has been replaced by the following procedures:
1. Prior to the first start all boats shall hand in a list identifying all sails onboard during the race series. Danish and German sails are identified by a unique measuring certificate number (sejlknappen). If the measuring certificate number is not available, this may be the case for non-Danish or non-German sails, the production date or the date and stamp of the domestic measures will be accepted.
2. Random inspection according to the “The X-99 International Class Rules and Constitution” will apply through out the race
3. Random control of crew weight and equipment will apply during the race
We trust we all will have two days of great sailing

New information given by Rob, does not change the Finnish vote "NO". We are still against the kevlar. We have several years' experience of using kevlar-sails. So, we are aware of the pros and cons of the kevlar and not willing to change back to it.
Also, it would be difficult to restrict sailcloth to "Kevlar Sportcloth" only (What would be the definition of "Sportcloth"?). Some owners would use more high-tech cloths instead, and that inevitably would increase the differences in our otherwise relatively homogenous one-design class, and also increase the total costs of the racing.

Osv. osv. Alle informationer i denne retning modtages med glæde. På forhånd
tak.

The preparations are well underway for the 2000 X-99 World Championships 8-15 July 2000 hosted by the Royal Temple Yacht Club in Ramsgate.
What would be really helpfull would be for all X-99 sailors to indicate their intention to enter. We have set up an on line entry form at www.rtyc.com where you may indicate if you are coming or not.
This will give the organising committee some indications as to the expected numbers. To date there are 15 entries and these are all displayed on the Uk web site.

It depends. If you are very keen at offshore sailing and if you are lucky to stay out of low pressures coming in from the west it could be a challenge to tell your grand children. I would personally take the route through the Nordostsee Kanal and sail inshore from Kiel via Storebaelt to Marstrand. If you get tired of sailing and would like a Danish bear there are a lot of small nice cosy harbours on the route.
If you take toe offshore you are on your own until you reach Tyborobn.

Hey! We are the first X-99 in Rostock but the class will be developed step by step also
in the eastern part of Germany. There are already ships in Wismar, Rerik, Greifswald,
Stralsund, Kröslin and now also in Rostock. Please allow us on this way to make some
advertisement for our region an especially for our home race "Warnemünder
Woche". The Warnemünder Woche will be held from 3/7/99 - 10/7/99. At the weekend
3-4/7/99 the big boats sails three olpympic races. We have had good discussions with the
racing consil, and we get a own start in case we are more then five. Which should be
possible. In case you want to sail one time a really long race you can take part on
"Rund Bornholm" , about 320 sm. Last year were more than 60 boats on the list
(due to the heavy wind conditions only 20 on the start). The start is so calculated that
the fastest ships starts at last and the first ship home is also the winner (Yardstick,
IMS). The next week-end at the 10th. of July will be the "Bäderregatta
Warnemünde-Kühlungsborn-Warnemünde", abt. 25 sm. We hope that also the
Warnemünder Woche found their place in the list of events for the X-99. We are discussing
in the moment to held the German opens X-99 year 2000 in Warnemünde (may be last weekend
in August 2000). So the "Warnemüder Woche" is a good test. If you have further

Hi there Danish X99 sailors! Ever thought of spending your holiday on board of an X99
in the Netherlands? We have sailed our X99 "Babysitter" to Danish waters last
year, and took her back to the Netherlands on the trailer of the Dutch class organisation.
This year we would like to explore Denmark a little further. Would it not be much more
convenient to just exchange boats? Our home port is Stellendam, near the province of
Zeeland which is one of the finest Dutch areas to visit with a boat. Our X99 (#198) is in
good condition, fully insured, with bed extensions, heating etc. The period we have in
mind is week 29 and/or 30 (17 July - 1 Aug) 1999. If you would like to give this idea a
thought, please mail. Erwan Groenendijk

Crew and weight limits: The crew limit today is 5 to 7 and the weight limit is
512Kg. We all know that you need to be as close to the weight limit as possible to build
up speed, and if you are not able to sign a full crew you don't stand a chance in to days
competition. If we lower the weight limit to e.g. 450Kg you will be able to race with 5 or
6 people instead to 6 to 7. This will free crew for other boats and reduce the stress on
the genoa.
Johnny Jensen < jgogo@post7.tele.dk >
Sønderborg Denmark - Thursday, January 08, 1998 at 13:42:58 (GMT+1)
It's very satisfying to see the interest in our boat and the rules. Generally, all
wants as many boats as possible to compete. It is therefore in the interest of all, that
we keep the costs as low as possible, and to keep older boats competetive by not allowing
a lot of expensive gear. It is stimulating the enthusiasm of owners that one of the
earliest examples shows ability to go first in DM and worlds. If we allow expensive
hi-tech sails some will still change sails very often and force the prices up. The class
has become faster in the recent years probably beacause of a lot of enthusiam of the
owners, not so much because of expensive gear, and this has increased the competition and
made a wider range in the skills of the competitors maybe keeping some from participating.
The weight/crew limit has been an issue of a lot of debate in DK. The international rules,
allowing 5-7 on a fixed weight limit seems fair and give the widest possibility to adjust
the individual crew to a maximal performance. Can "Jens Kjærsgaard" give some
comments on how far we have reached in changing the danish rules. Maybe we should dicuss
the possibility of allowing an asymmetrical spinnaker (not so costly) which could incrase
speed on reaching..

My opinion is that simpleness and costefficinies must be the guide in loking on
changes in the rules. If kevlar sails is more cost effective than they might be allowed.
But if it open up for special designed sails and that money instead of sailing skill have
an impact on the results I dont whant them. What attracted me to bee an X99 sailor mas the
simple one design rules. Dont start making them complicated.

Alice II, Skovshoved Denmark - Wednesday, December 24, 1997 at 14:36:36 (GMT+1)
One of the key elements of the further success of the X-99 class is, in my opinion,
the total cost. Today it is quite frustrating to have to invest in new sails (genua; main)
practically every year, and in addition the sails (main) are extremely sensitive (brittle)
towards handling. We have experience in using kevlar sails from IMS sailing with X-99
starting with the season -94. Of course these sails are 50% more expensive but, for
instance, our kevlar main is still in excellent condition despite heavy handling during
all these seasons. Due to the nature of the kevla fiber the shape is still the same.
Moreover it can be handled with ease, since folding is of no problem - this make the sail
much more convenient also for family sailing since it has not to be rolled. The benefit
with the kevlar genua is also its superiour strength which means that it can be used
several seasons. Since we have very positive experience (i.e. mainly economical!) of using
kevlar sails in X-99 sailing, I like to start a debate whether it is time to allow these
type of sails, and under what conditions, in X-99 one design races. A good way of keeping
the economy in control would be with complemantary rules of (strict!) minimum cloth weight
and maybe in addition a total sailweight which would be very easy to check. Very light and
exotic constructions should of course not be allowed.

Andrew McIrvine, Secretary of the International Class Association, has opened the
discussion concerning our Class rules and I approve the initiative. My contribution to the
debate is that we should concentrate on the equipment where the current use has developed
far beyond the initial idea by Niels Jeppesen. This means I have no problem with the genoa
track as it is, but I am very annoyed with the check stay. The use of the check stay has
moved from being a passive device only used in rough sees to an active trim facility
controlling the shape of the main sail. With the restriction that the check stays shall
only be adjusted by block and tackle system mounted on the genoa tracks, all kind of more
or less successful implementations have been tried. I propose that we remove the paragraph
to se if the use of this trim facility will develop into some thing more practical in the
future.

potential International forum for these discussions. Best wishes, Andrew
